The rocky road to Australia, or The Biggest post you ever did see...

Hello avid fans and mortal enemies alike. Its been a long time since we had an actual update with real pictures. So without further ado, here's what we have been up to since we left Thailand (with tears in our eyes) and flew to that mysterious continent/nation known as AUSTRALIA.....

Peter and myself landed in Sydney, having left a full 6 days before the girls if memory serves. Before we arrived in Sydney, Claire Vicki, and Julie made it known to us that if we needed a place to crash and were happy with sofa's, then we were more than welcome. Being happy with anything that wasn't a plane (flight was 10 hours) we gratefully accepted.

Those who know me well will know I am something of a cider fiend. In SE Asia, cider is rarely available, and when it can be found it is heart breakingly expensive. I was making do with Thai whiskey and coke. The re-availability of cider was celebrated with the purchase and consumption of more than a few bottles of Bulmers. Yes I know it says Magners on the bottle but you know its the same thing so stop splitting hairs! Vicki and Julie had abandoned the flat for the Australian Grand Prix, so it was left to Claire to play hostess and she did a wonderful job, even preparing a meal for us! Another bonus of being in Australia was the presence of The Dood!! Flown in fresh from Ireland, he was traveling up along the east coast to Cairns with Peter and I. He was going to be doing all the driving...

As the night went on, there was dancing and much rejoicing as old friends were reunited after lengthy separations. The sombrero was brought out and Peter did much dancing. I later found out that this was a practice started by a miss Kiki Fontaine.

When Vicki and July did return, they had a surprise for us!! Emma Mac had stowed away on board their car all the way from Melbourne to Sydney so that she could visit us!! Little did she realize that a little further on in time, she wouldn't be able to get rid of us! We spent a happy few days in Sydney, with even time for a few nights out. To see those pictures, you'll have to check Emma's site, as I forgot my camera!!

Our time in Sydney came to an end very quickly. We were eager to get out on the open round and see if the rest of Australia was as crushingly expensive! Colin, Peter and myself founded Team Adventure: Mobile Unit! We went to a car rental place, and picked out our steed. She was a Toyota Camry, who soon earned herself the name Motherbitch.

Colin was our official driver, not letting us near the wheel even though the car was an automatic, and the straight highways were empty of police. While our mothers may thank him for being so law abiding, we did not. This picture of Peter was taken as we left the car rental place. Pulling out into traffic was not one of Colin's strong points...

He's looking puzzled because, to our great surprise and annoyance, its nearly impossible to turn right in many places in Australia. While trying to escape Sydney, we could see the road we needed many times, just a right turn away! But for some they wont let you do it, and have signs up everywhere saying so! Thanks mainly to a heroic effort of navigation from Peter, and some deft left turning from The Dood, we departed from Sydney...

Sydney harbor bridge as seen when traveling at 200 MPH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's a lie actually, but if you squint a bit you get the effect.

The open road!! Much of the road travel looked like this actually. Some parts you had fields of sugar cane at the roadside, sometimes wheat. Always present was the thrill of seeing a new country for the first time :)

One of the first thing we saw was this! The BIG BANANA!! Australia is famous for its giant oversized and often pointless tourist traps. This one was pretty cool though. Situated in the middle of a large banana plantation, you could walk around and see how banana production is done. It also had a well stocked shop selling awesome frozen bananas on a stick covered in chocolate and sprinkles. MM!!

Peter perhaps missed his calling when he became a chemist. He shows here an expression that would surely promise large sales of his ice cream namesakes. We ate well that day!!

Our first encounter with Australia's spiders. These bastards are huge!! They are also really pointy and evil looking, and span webs seemingly exclusively across the paths we used. Thankfully we never got too close to them, except that time Colin swallowed one while asleep that peter and I never mentioned to him.

cooped up in a car for days on end with no time apart may seem like a road to ruin (teehee) but TA:MU are no ordinary group. The Dood never once got mad with Peters joking. The worst he did was scowl and occasionally not offer to make tea. Peter, to his credit, never did stop joking around.

We managed to make it to the eastern most point of Australia!! Peter was suffering from a bad cold at this time, which is why he's dressed like its a summers day in Dublin. It was sweltering. We managed the long walk around the coast without passing out, and even saw some sea turtles swimming around the rocks!

I know you don't want to see stupid turtles when there's more BIG THINGS to be seen!! If you haven't guessed already is the Giant Pineapple!! This one you could actually go inside and see a fascinating little display on how canned fruit making is carried out. I'm going to save those pictures to show ya'll when I return though!!

This one is my personal favorite. The Giant Prawn!! The giant gift shop inside barely acknowledges that on its roof is a the worlds biggest artificial shellfish. Some lucky people back home will be getting postcards with a night time view of this on it. Contain your excitement please!!

One of the most fun stops we had on the way to Cairns was Fraser Island an island made completely out of sand! Your average car isn't able for the sandy tracks that criss cross the island, So it was time to go OFF ROAD...

With Motherbitch getting a well earned rest, we took possession of this monster. Dubbed The Thing That Should Not be, mainly by me and mainly in secret, it had The Dood drooling over the prospect of getting behind the wheel. That didn't last long as they made us watch a safety video which consisted of 30 minutes of 4x4 's either trapped by the incoming tide, or on their roofs after a surprise encounter with a beach creek that was deeper than it appeared.

Fraser island is home to some interesting wildlife, including dingos, lizards, and more snakes than you can shake a stick at. One of them is the Death Adder. A sign warns that unlike other snakes, these guys will not flee when humans show up, but will often attack right away. Oh joy! That guy up there is a lizard I'm afraid, not a snake. The lizards are really hard to take pictures of, because their camouflage makes them blend into the undergrowth, so please, appreciate my effort!

Despite the risks of death from snakes and The Doods desire to hit every single pot hole on the island, Fraser Island is a great place. It has a couple of lakes to see and the water is crystal clear. We even took off our shoes and socks and took a stroll around the edge of the lake for a while.

For the second time this trip, Peter is seen looking as contented as a person can be while gripping someone in a headlock. The Dood is master of the Sparrow Punches though, and was not trapped for long!!

This picture here was taken just before Peter and The Dood took off on a race down a really steep sand hill. They got about 100 meter's down the sand bank when good 'ol Pete tripped and flopped head first into the sand. It was awesome! Take a look here for the video. It lasts for 30 days, unless someone downloads it, then it lasts for another 30 days, and so on!

Fraser Island also has many fun ways to spend an afternoon...

One of the things they tell you on the safety video is that the east cost beach is sometimes used as an air craft runway! It says "Be on the look out for planes landing or taking off and be prepared to give way suddenly."

The weather on the beach drive was a little messy at times. The Dood tried to clear the windscreen by driving into the sea once or twice. If there were any planes trying to land, the first time we saw them would probably when the pilots came through our window :) Ok, it wasn't that dramatic, but its a long post and I'm trying to keep you interested!!

More dangerous than the planes were the other people driving along the beach. The law says keep to the left as you drive, but this guy kept coming at us head on until it dawned on him that going around us was probably easier than going through us, and he swerved to the side. Not shown in the picture is Peter and The Dood flipping him many birds.

Team Adventure: Mobile Unit pauses briefly for a publicity picture! Send requests for signed copies to the usual address...

I told you there was dingos on the island!! We saw a few of them on the beach. The snack table and camping area's are actually surrounded by wire fences to prevent dingos sneaking in to steal away human food and small children. That may sound like a poor taste joke, but its not! They are a pure bread of dingo and still very wild, to the authorities discourage people from getting too close to them.

And so our time on the island came to an end. We had a nice drive back down the east coast beach, praying that we would get to the end of it. The tide was coming in at a quick speed and threatening to drag us out to sea, and make us a part of the new safety video.

Back on the road to Cairns, and once again I prove how mature I can be by giggling at this receipt. In case you're wondering it was for an ice lolly.

Outside a national park, and The Dood takes a picture of me with the worlds greatest number plate. I probably should have waited until the couple had left their pickup truck before running over for a picture, but they were very understanding. Probably because the wanted the Irish guy shouting METAL!!!! RAAR!! HAIL SATAN!! to go away as soon as possible.

The Dood is a forester by trade and stopped off at several of the National Parks along the way. The trees, the buzzing insects, the squelshy paths... He really was in his element. Here he sings a tune written by his hero's. Peter moves in to save the hearing of everyone in a 100m radius.

Return of the over sized novelty things!! This time, a giant MANGO!! This one was on its own by the side of the highway, without even a tacky souvenir stall to keep it company. Sadly it would be the last Big Thing we saw on our trip, as we were nearly at Cairns...

Finally we made it!! We brought the good weather with us too, as it rained almost the entire time we stayed in Cairns. We passed through a few places that had been hit by the recent Cyclone Larry, and saw a lot of villages still showing damage, and forests that had been pulled to pieces by the winds. The Dood shed a single tear... During a lull in the downpour, we took a trip to the skyrail. Its a big cable car the goes over the roof of a tropical forest, occasionally dropping you off so you can wander around amongst the trees.

The weather made parts of the cable car trip quite spooky. We traveled into cloud banks, and everything would disappear for a while. Empty cable cars would burst forth from the white, with no one inside! Where had their occupants gone?? Would we disappear also!?!?

Turns out they were just walking around the trees. Outside the cable car the rain had started again. We were given umbrellas to protect us, and The Dood regaled us with a verse of Singin' in the Rain.

There were some pretty impressive views once we were out of the fog. Here is part of a series of huge water falls. They use the one further upstream for hydro electric, and its pretty loud, even from the viewing stand a safe distance away. That wasn't the most astounding thing we saw that day though... They had an Irish bar perched on the top of the tropical rainforest trail!! I know you can usually find Irish people in most places, but this is just silly!

We stayed a few more days in Cairns before we decided to fly back to Sydney. We had a night out with Vicki and her folks who were there by coincidence! We went to Jonnys Bar and had a great time listening to the band members tear strips off each other while smiling for the crowd. It still had not stopped raining, and another cyclone was nearby threatening to delay our flight. We left Cairns in floods, and after a very dodgy take off, we were on our way. A few days in Sydney and then it was away to Melbourne for Peter and I, and sadly, for The Dood to go back to Ireland. Team Adventure salutes you and is proud to have you as our official driver!

Melbourne!! What a great city! Not that you could tell from this picture. That's where being arty get you, Rachel!!

Emma Mac & her crew (She-Ra, Nikitol, Cat-Riona and River-Luke!) have been very kindly putting us up until we find a place of our own. While they are at work the place can be very quiet, and we have to make our own fun. Witness Rachel the WHITE KWAII NINJA!

You wouldn't know it to look at her, but Emma likes a drink or two. She frequently encourages nights of dancing in her flat, and insists that everyone take part. It would be rude not to.

Ok, maybe you can tell she likes a drink from this picture... I just wish there was a way to get to you the video of the girls dancing around with pool cues to Sounds of the Underground, but at 57megs, its just too big, sorry guys. Its truely hilarious though.

You've done really well to read this much. I'm proud of you, really. You may want to go get a tea or coffee and maybe a biscuit before the next part. Its one of the highlights of Australia so far...

The Meet the STARS of Neighbours Night~~!!!!!!!

Just so no one can deny it, everyone was out for this. Even Rachel and Peter, who escaped being in the picture. Three of the cast were present, Harold, Conor, and Ned. Later on there would be a special performance by Dr. Karl Kennedy and his band. The anticipation was electric.

Harold!! He may be a nice guy on screen, but at the neighbours night, he was Rated R!! A funny man, but light years away from his character. He singled one of our group out for special attention, possibly because this was her third time going to a Harold night, and he thought he was in with a chance. Cat-Riona you are officially a Harold groupie!

Conor sang happy birthday for a star struck and doe eyed lady from the crowd. He also answered a question from our own Nikitol. She didn't hear his answer though, as she was sitting there staring and slightly drooling...

Here's Rach and I with Ned! Having not seen Neighbours in ages, I had no idea who he is, but my sources say he's the most beautiful police man in Neighbours. And the only police man in neighbours. But still beautiful. Emma wants everyone to know how beautiful Ned is.

Two legends meet! Harold was actually a nice guy when the pictures were being taken. Gone was the rude jokes and in there place were little anecdotes about Ireland and people he knew there.

We didn't have much time to chat, as I was barreled out of the way by Rachel and Emma. If I'm not mistaken, the twinkle has returned to Harold's eye!!

Conor was also a nice guy. He'll be doing stand up comedy after he leaves neighbours. He took minor offence at my shirt, insisting that he never lied to me, and had in fact never met me. I let it pass as he was clearly drunk.

Rachel was next up for a picture. When asked what she thought of Conor, she replied "He's very warm." and skipped off to the bar to look for kittens, or maybe another drink.

A wonderful early birthday present from Rach! Yes, that's a signed Harold postcard you see me clutching!!! No you cant have it!!

Never say never? Team Adventure unveils a possible teaser trailer of future events...

And now the Highlight of the night!!~~~~~!!!!!!~~~~~!!!!!!

Dr. Karl Kennedy and his band Waiting room!!! Yes I know this sounds naff, but it was a really really really good night!! They played all covers, and played them all really well, including a room shaking version of Song 2! Check out all those cameras too. Can that many crazed girls be wrong??

The man clearly loved it up on stage, and his showmanship made up for any fluffed notes he made. Not that we noticed any, we were to busy having a good time and, oh my Buddha, DANCING!!!

Its at this point that the night got a little blurry. I has used this picture to show what I mean. I'm sure the good citizens of Drunkendancistan didn't need the help, bless your socks. We had a great night, even the part that involved high speed impact with a phone box.

I leave you with this picture of Emma the wino. If you read all this then I thank you (if you read this all in one go, then aren't you lucky to have so much free time!), as it took bloody ages to do. I'll certainly update you guys more often to avoid giant post syndrome. Future events include TEAM Adventure gets a house, and Team Adventure gets a job!! Take care, and talk to ya'll soon!

Edit: Holy crap, look what lives in Australia!! Those guys are awesome!
